Nicholas Sparks Read-A-Thon #2: A Walk To Remember

Wednesday, July 29, 2015

This is the book that people will always warn you about.. The book that if you haven't read or heard yet, people will guess that you lived your whole life under a rock... (I've heard of it and I've known it for like forever through the film, yet I had the opportunity to read it only now, so I'm an in-betweener! uhm, maybe I was kind'a living on the skirt of the rock, I've known and heard it for so long but 'tis only now that I've come to read it. Congrats to me!)

A Walk To Remember is the book that transcended generations and is still loved and still highly recommended by a lot of readers.

BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW

Title: A Walk To Remember
Author: Nicholas Sparks
Published by: Grand Central Publishing on Sept 1st 2004
Genre: Romance, Drama
Setting: Beaufort, North Carolina (USA)
Format: MM Paperback, 240 pages
My Copy Source: Borrowed from Daniela
Purchase: NBS [PH] | Fully Booked [PH] | B & N | Amazon
Rating: 4 Roses

Every April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister.

A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it.

Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood...

The book is entirely different from the movie that I've watched several times when I was younger (I remembered crying buckets and I remembered being envious of their love story). I fell in love with the movie first and then I recently opened my heart to the novel where the movie was adapted. I was actually deciding on whether I would use inspired or adapted because the book and the movie have an entirely different story but the same in some ways. The movie was the expanded version of the book and it was like they only got the idea of the book itself and fashioned an entirely different story as to what the book actually told. Right now, you might think that in the present, that kind of step would be frowned upon by many book lovers out there, but I can assure you that any book lover would agree with the way they altered the book to further have an in depth story on screen and let me just say, Bravo! It's not always that a movie adaptation was better than the book and when that happens, it's just fairly remarkable. *slow clap*

The book is a very short and light read that you can finish in just one sitting, maybe 3-5 hours at least. It's a different take on romance, it's not the good girl falling for the bad boy that we've all seen numerous times on some romance stories. It's the other way around, it's the bad boy falling for the good girl. Not that he's an extreme bad boy in the book, but still, I think you see the point.

The book was told by Landon when he looked back on the day he found his true love. It was great to see the story from his perspective because it gave us the chance to see how he really felt. He was not an extreme bad boy but he doesn't hang out with the "goodies", he hangs out with the jocks even though he wasn't a jock himself. Landon, in the book, was the guy determined to get into a good college that's why he found himself the student body president and the lead role in the play where Jamie also starred in.

I guess watching the film made me a bit disappointed about the book in certain ways because the book was really short and there are scenes in the movie that was really remarkable so let me just enumerate them.
  • Landon being the extreme bad boy in the movie to the point that someone nearly died because of him and his friends.
  • The BUCKET LIST! Oh my, it was the sweetest thing ever and it wasn't in the book. Being on two places at the same time, getting a tattoo, and building a telescope? Wow, it was the sweetest thing ever!
  • The songs! Yep, that made it better! ;D
  • Shane West and Mandy Moore, yep, can't argue with that.
The book was good in its own way, it still captured the emotion of losing someone you love. It showed love in its purest form and even if they are young, it showed the power of real love and how it can transform you. This book has shown its readers how the magic of love and faith changes our perspective of life and even in the smallest way possible makes a miracle even when we haven't seen it yet.

Lastly, I just want to get this out, Jamie reminded me of Stargirl (Check out my review)! They are so similar but unique in their own ways. These characters just want to make you change for the better.

Both the movie and the book made their way to our hearts in their own way and both are highly recommended! But please, do read it first before watching the movie so as not to get a wee bit disappointed because I can't tell you how much the movie is deeper than the book but also in many ways, the book also has its own story to tell.

Nicholas Sparks Read-A-Thon #1: The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

Saturday, July 18, 2015

Can I just say that this is my third book by Nicholas Sparks? I know, I know, I am sorry I am missing a lot. I've read Safe Haven and The Lucky One and I really don't remember a lot from my experience mostly because I was way younger when I read it and I don't think my level of maturity allowed me to really appreciate it so I haven't really retained a lot. Let us just say that I am starting blank, okay? Erase Safe Haven and The Lucky One...

*erasing...*

Oh my gosh guyss.. This is my very first Nicholas Sparks novel and I enjoyed The Choiceso much that I am planning to read all of his books before school starts this August. Title: The Choice
Author: Nicholas Sparks
Published by: Grand Central Publishing on 19th of August 2008
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Adult Fiction
Setting: North Carolina
Format: Mass Market Papperback

Rating: 4 Roses

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life -- boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies -- he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the appealing redhead seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him...and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn't help. Despite himself, Travis can't stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, The Choice ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

One of my bookish friends, Daniela, recommended this book to me right after she finished it. It's been so long since I last read a novel from Nicholas Sparks and besides, I just finished reading Sundays at Tiffany's that time so why not, right?

Even from the start, I was already curious. The prologue didn't gave much away and that was the thing that made me more curious. The thing I love about this book is, it's a weekend walk through their story and you won't ever feel that the story is in a hurry to end. It's a lie-down-on-a-recliner-overlooking-a-lake-with-the-sun's-rays-hitting-every-inch-of-your-skin type of story. It's laid back but it is very entertaining, what with every conversation filled with humorous dialogues.

I love Travis, Gabbie and Travis' sister, Stephanie!

Travis is the person that I would want to invite to have lunch and dinner with me, hell I would invite him to talk to me forever! This person is definitely one that I would want to converse with every minute, he has an amazing personality and the sense of humor is just, ugh, he actually caught my heart with his sense of humor. Not only that, he is a very good husband! He's so sweet and he just knows what a woman wants and he's just  *swooooons*. I cannot tell you how much I love him, though.

Gabbie and Stephanie are just the girlfriends that you want in your life and I enjoyed their company in this book so much.

*BIT OF A SPOILER*

PART ONE

I enjoyed every bit of their moments here in the first part. There is never a dull moment with Travis and Gabbie, even though it's a bit strange because while I am seriously getting tired of all the YA novels that starts with boy meets girl then eyes will sparkle and there are hearts all over, I enjoyed the book despite of that. (Seriously guys, I'm getting tired of those stories that has the girl and boy met for a fraction of a second, and then they're suddenly in love. UGH Come on, give it a depth! Get to know each other before you draw hearts all over your eyes. It's okay to drool though. *wink*)

Okay, okay, despite this new idea of being tiresome to some novel's insta-love "cliche-ness", I found myself defending this book. Yes, I hated that they fell in love in a course of 48 hours and it sucks you know? Strong attraction, yes, that is understandable, but to be in love with him, and broke it off with your current boyfriend just seems harsh. I guess she could have call it off with Kevin (the current boyfriend at that time) and then dated Travis for a certain amount of time before heading off to a freaking wedding! Anyway, the book didn't elaborate much about the Kevin matter so I really assumed that that is what happened.

Oops, I did not defended it at all. So the thing is, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the weekend they had. It's not at all lovey-dovey that's why Travis and Gabbie was able to scratch the surface of each other. It doesn't seem rush, it just seems like a pretty normal but long 48 hours for them. I didn't want the idea of insta-love, but in this book, all you can do is just go with it because it's not like they made it a point to paint it across their faces that they were in love that's why even though it's too fast, all you can just do is enjoy Travis' company. *squeeeals*

In conclusion, I hate the ending of the part one, but I enjoyed everything from the start and in between.

PART TWO

This will be short because I was bored to death in the second part. I didn't like anything at all about it and I just  flew my way through it just to finish it because I know that in the end, Gabbie will wake up when all hope seems lost. It was great that Travis didn't give up on her and it was lovely to see Travis be the husband material that every girl hopes for even though he only exists in the fictional world.

***

Oh my gosh, I encountered it again! How when we stare at the stars, we're staring backwards in time. I first encountered it from Lifespan of Starlight and here it is again. I loved that I knew all about it right now because to look at the stars that way just seems lovely.

See below for the pictures of the two books from my bookstagram.

BOOK NEWS: Yahoo! Movies Announced Glass Sword's Cover Reveal!

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

When Glass Sword opens, Maven has betrayed Mare and his brother, Cal, and the two have been rescued by the Scarlet Guard. In addition to fighting the segregation that torments the red-blooded masses, Mare will be seeking out other Reds like her. Where the first book cover showed an upside-down crown dripping red blood, the new one follows suit, this time with a crown made of glass swords and dripping both red and silver blood, a symbol, Aveyard told us, meant to show that “both sides are going to have problems this time around.”

Source: Yahoo! Movies

WHAT THE FUN?! Aside from the fact that classes are suspended and I'm going to be staying in bed all day today, this thing popped on my instagram feed this morning and I was psyched! Like woah!!! At first I thought it was fan made but I saw it on NBS' ig and it was actually posted by epicreads but originally, the cover reveal was from Yahoo!, so it's not a hoax! IT IS REAL!!

So anyway, it is a very good news on a typical rainy Wednesday morning and I was dancing with delight because it was a really good cover! Even if it looks like a chandelier and my sister said it's like Elsa, I think it was gorgeous and I'm pretty much excited for next year, February 9, and I know that the wait will be excruciating! UGH

If you have accidentally or intentionally read my review about Red Queen, you'll find that I was actually disappointed that there was no map in the book and I think they heard me. I guess they'll be putting this on Glass Sword, huh? YAY! The map is freaking red and looks like freaking bloody death all around.

So whaddiya think about the map? I love a book with a great map! :D

Aside from that, Yahoo! also announced that Red Queen will be coming to the big screen  and will be directed by Elizabeth Banks! Who's excited for that? I know I am! :D

I haven't actually been tracking down all my one day reads but I am fairly sure that when I finish a book within a span of 24 hours, there must be something in it that had my attention and it just needs to be finished right away and as much as I want to prolong my stay with that certain book, I just can't seem to put it down until I finish it eventually. The thing is, it happened to me again, with this book called Sundays at Tiffany's. I guess you are familiar with it? Yes I'm pretty sure you are because it was turned into a movie last 2010 and I haven't watched the film yet around this time that I am writing my introduction but now that I am continuing this post, I have already watched it! Hooray!

First, the book cover of the copy that I owned and got from Starry Books Shop for a fairly cheap price (it's pre-owned but it's in a very good condition that it seems brand new) is a bit misleading. This book is a movie tie in edition and if you haven't watched the film yet, like myself when I read the book, it could lead to a bit of confusion. This book cover shows two little kids, and apparently, one of them was the imaginary friend, which is the boy and his name is Michael. While it is probably the truest form of imaginary friend when you're a kid, in the book, Jane's was a 35 year old man and knowing nothing about the movie and letting the book cover sink, I thought that Michael was really a kid! But no, he's not and that got me in knots while reading but then I figured it out eventually.

This book is an easy read and with some funny sarcastic dialogues, and based on some of the books that I have read by James Patterson, this book is on par with Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas! I've only read three and I love these two and hated First Love, so I guess I'll be trying his other books and not judge him solely on a single book hate.

So a new motto for me: "Don't judge an author by one of his books but if the number increases, don't read that author again." A little warning though, not because one wormiee doesn't love a certain author, doesn't mean you won't love him too. It goes with taste and we have different tastes, okay? And besides, it's only one book and James Patterson is a great author based on Suzzane's and Sunday's and I highly recommend these books! Go on, please do.

Title: Sundays at Tiffany's

Author: James Patterson & Gabrielle Charbonnet
Published by: Grand Central Publishing on 1st June 2009
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Chick Lit, Contemporary
Setting: New York, US
Format: Paperback, Movie Tie-in Edition, 319 pages
My Copy Source: Bought [Starry Books Shop]
Rating: 4 Roses

As a little girl, Jane has no one. Her mother, the powerful head of a Broadway theater company, has no time for her. She does have one friend—a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael—but only she can see him.

Years later, Jane is in her thirties and just as alone as ever. Then she meets Michael again—as handsome, smart and perfect as she remembers him to be. But not even Michael knows the reason they've really been reunited.

Sundays at Tiffany's is a love story with an irresistible twist, a novel about the child inside all of us-and the boundary-crossing power of love.

100% RECOMMENDED! Especially during Christmas time, but since that is still a good 5 months  away, you can read it anytime. Okay? It's cute and it's fun and it won't be what you think it is when you read the prologue.

Speaking of prologue, HA! I love a book that proves me wrong. I read the prologue and thought, WTF? This is a bit revealing, isn't it? But then again, it slapped me right back and said "YOU JUDGER!" =))

This book, if you have no idea yet, is about Jane Margaux, daughter of Vivienne Margaux, the busy and perfectionist owner of a big theater company in New York if I am not mistaken. Jane has a 35-year old imaginary friend named Michael who will leave her on her 8th birthday. Jane was deeply hurt because when he leaves her, she'll be alone again so he promised her that as soon as he leaves, she will forget everything about him. But that didn't happen, Jane remembers everything until she was on her thirties and engaged and everything until he came right back into Jane's life and from there, everything was in full brightness with their reunion.

I love all the characters in the book after watching the film, because by then, I was able to fully appreciate their vivid personalities as compared to the film. Take Jane's fiance for example, his name is Hugh, I love to kill him in the book. He's a self-centered bastard who wants nothing but fame from Jane whereas in the movie, he's apparently a not so vain but still kind'a vain and famous fiance. Next is Vivienne, she served a lot of purpose in the book and her character is a lot more antagonistic compared to the movie. I just don't think I'll ever get the reason why she's the way she is. Vivienne is a bitch to her daughter and the book just didn't answer why, there is no story. The only reason for her being a bitch was  that she wants Jane to be independent. You can do that, you know, even without making your daughter fell like she's worthless! UGH. (see? I'm much more alive and kickass with the book's characters because they are easy to hate HAHA). Who else? Let's see... I guess those are the two characters that are "hate-able" in the book and "love-able" in the film.

That little plot twist in the end was by far unpredictable. I am not saying anymore because I might spoil you. I've already spoiled a little already by saying something about the prologue. I'm sorry about that, okay?

All in all, I love the feel of breezing through the pages because I love that it did not bore me. I love how it ended and I love Michael, really. It made me wish I had an imaginary friend. The one who would know everything about me even when I already forgot it myself.

MOVIE REVIEW

* * *

The movie was charming and  a bit different form the book's story line. Michael, for one, is a kid and not a 35-year old imaginary friend and he grew up into a man and came back into Jane's life after leaving her at Tiffany&Co. on her 10th birthday, the age of awareness, with a broken heart (at age 10 of course it's because she lost a friend).

Again, I am in love with Michael, not just in the book but also in the movie. He is freaking handsome and funny and childish. As for Jane, she's sooo pretty and it's just... Even with entirely different story line, the movie is still great and enjoyable.

There are parts that I wished they'd retained, but then again, I still loved both the movie and the book even with different pros and cons. It's a happy ending and realizing that Jane is not happy with Hugh and she's completely herself with Michael is enough for me to feel joyous even with the less dramatic ending as opposed to the book's VERY TRAGIC AND DRAMATIC end.

Definitely a chick flick must watch! Go read and watch wormiees!

* * *

Another great recommend is Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson also. It will leave you teary eyed and the film adaptation is, as far as I can remember from the book, entirely the same and you'll absolutely love it. Go Go Go! :)

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard Book Review

Friday, July 3, 2015

First, the hype around this book was palpable. It was like one of the most talked about books that came out this year. So I was curious, but not so much that I would risk being spoiled so I tried to stay away from the reviews and sticked to the synopsis.

I've waited for this book for 2 months. Two freaking months of people actually reading it already and me waiting and waiting... And when it arrived, I just admired the book cover because it's so freaking beautiful in its simplicity. Silver crown tainted with red blood (very fitting with the story) and the big words, RED QUEEN. Gorgeous *in a singsong voice*.

You can sneak a peek at the beautiful book right HERE.

Title: Red Queen
Author: Victoria Aveyard
Published by: HarperTeen, 10th February 2015
Series: Red Queen #1
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Dystopian
Format: Hardcover, 383 pages
My Copy Source: Bought [Barnes & Noble]
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | FullyBooked [PH] | NBS [PH]
Rating: 4 Roses

Mare Barrow’s world is divided by blood—those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own—an ability she didn’t know she had. Except…her blood is Red.
To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betrothes her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard—the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince—and Mare against her own heart.

Read Excerpt

I dived into this book half blind. All I know is that the world is divided into two, the silvers and the red. The silvers having god-like powers and rules above the reds who are lowly and powerless. Mare Barrow is nothing special, just one of the faces from the unworthy reds but there is something special about her, one that she has no idea about and one that nobody understands. Those are the things that I kept and the only things that I need to know before reading it so that I won't be expecting a lot, although actually, I was expecting much because of the freaking hype that's why the best I could do was to avoid the reviews.

It took me long enough to finish this book because the beginning was dragging, all but drawing the world in front of me that it bored me. The thing is, of course, you want the world to be as vivid as possible because it's a different world, but then again there's also this thing where an author can paint an amazing world without boring its readers, but the world building in this book didn't do it for me. Despite the fact that it bored me, it still amazed me. It's not magical for me, but it's powerful and scary at the same time.

It was hard to connect with the characters at first because I was bored with the first few pages. You know I only ever got the chance to quicken my reading pace when the extraordinary Mare was known and then became slow again inside the palace and then bam, bam, bam! The second half was freaking ACTION-PACKED, especially the ending. Woah super awesome and kick-ass!

* * *
Silvers are awesome but hollow and stupid. I mean, yes, they know how to oppress, they have the power to kill a person with a single flick or wink or anything but they are just as destructible as a normal human being. They look at themselves as gods but they are such scaredy-cats. But anyway, they have the right to be scared when the resistance is lurking in the shadows, though it's just weird that their characters don't come out as strong when they are supposed to especially that they should live up to their names as "silvers". I don't really know how to explain it...

Anyway, Mare is a kick-ass newbie! Haha, despite having no knowledge of who she is or what she's capable of, she knows when to stand her ground and fight and when to back down and hide (not literally). That's the thing that you will love about her, she's strong, but the thing is, she's indecisive and fickle. Hahaha, I can't blame ger though, the people around her are just so..... *can't spoil ya guys* I can't tell you enough about the awesomeness of the ending of the book, it's like gladiators inside an arena and 5 silvers are trying to kill 2 people and ugggh! The best surprises are best left to the end of the book, but don't you forget the cliff hangers too!

Damn the wait again.

HAHAHAHA, a never ending laugh for another love square! =))) It's not like romance is a big thing in this book but there's just no story to it at all. They all just felt the attractions and bam! Mare loves Cal but Cal is a leader who has no compassion for the reds so Mare is torn between liking Maven, the perfect prince, but there's still Kilorn, the childhood bestie... Oh Mare, such a beautiful girl *scoff*. Kidding. The best thing about the romances escalating quickly in this book is that you don't know who you'll root for! I mean, for me, I don't know who I'll pick for Mare. Cal is like the obvious choice but Maven is perfect and there's Kilorn who she cares for too damn much. But hey, knowing that this is a baby of The Hunger Games [refer below], I'm guessing Kilorn will just be the best friend forever. Bwahaha, let's see in the coming books. Aryt?

What else to say... Why 3.8 stars? I love the book but I didn't LOVE the book, y'kno what I'm saying? Ya, I know you don't. :( Okay, first, I didn't end up loving it as much as I thought I would but I enjoyed it despite the boring parts. Another thing why it didn't get a whole 5 stars is because the story is not really all that original and unique. It's like a baby of The Hunger Games Trilogy and The Selection and Divergent and X-Men and Idk, others as well, i think. Hahahah they all hook up to make way for their baby, RED QUEEN. Hahaa, and speaking of that, why is it entitled Red Queen by the way? It's not like she became queen at all! Ugh, misleading, misleading!

Lots of issues with the book but 3.8 stars eh? Haha because it's the ending that got me! That was a literal BAM! BAM! BAM! I just can't stop talking about it. Intrigued??

Okay, guys, read the book and then come back here with your jaw dropped to the ground when you get to the major plot twist and the betrayal and the ending, okay? Coz I'm pretty sure you'll be speechless with all those scenes that will be thrown at you by the last quarter of the book.

Enjoy Wormiees!
